Heavy-Duty Long-Life Propagation Trays
18 Cell Lifetime Air Pruning Propagation Tray
Give your seedlings a stronger start with this heavy-duty 18-cell air pruning propagation tray. Designed to actively improve root development, it produces healthier, more resilient plants compared to standard seed trays.
Made from rigid, injection-moulded plastic, this tray is built for repeated use season after season. It won’t flex or crack like thin vacuum-formed trays, making it a long-term investment for serious growers.
How Air Pruning Works
Unlike traditional pots where roots hit the wall and begin circling, air pruning trays are designed to expose root tips to air. When a root reaches the edge of the cell and encounters air, the tip naturally stops growing. The plant then responds by producing multiple new side roots further back in the cell.
The result is a dense, fibrous root system instead of long, spiralled roots. This improves nutrient uptake, water absorption, and overall plant strength.
Why That Matters
-
Stronger root structure
-
Faster establishment after transplanting
-
Reduced transplant shock
-
Less risk of root binding
-
Healthier, more vigorous plants
Plants grown in air pruning trays establish more quickly when moved into beds, borders or larger pots because their roots are already well branched and evenly distributed.
Watering Advice
Air pruning increases airflow around the root zone, which is excellent for root health but means the growing medium dries out faster than in solid-walled trays.
For best results:
-
Water from above so the entire root zone is evenly saturated
-
Check moisture levels more frequently
You may need to water slightly more often, but you’ll benefit from better aeration, improved drainage and a lower risk of root rot.
Ideal For
Vegetables, herbs, perennials, shrubs and young plants that benefit from strong early root development. A space-efficient alternative to individual pots, keeping propagation neat and organised.
If you want stronger plants from the start, this tray doesn’t just hold seedlings — it actively improves how they grow.
A Serious Alternative to 9cm Pots
With generous cell volume, this tray acts as a structured, space-efficient alternative to traditional 9cm pots — without the clutter and handling of individual containers.
Ideal for:
-
Vegetables
-
Perennials
-
Shrubs
-
Herbs
-
Young plants that need proper root development
